8 Persons Dead, Houses Damaged As Heavy Downpour Hit New York City

It was a torrent of heavy downpour in the northeast part of the United States-New York City which has reportedly claimed the lives of eight persons, splintered houses, submerged cars, halted subway services and the ongoing US Open.

New Yorkers on Wednesday witnessed flash flooding forcing the governor Mayor Bill de Blasio to declare a state of emergency saying New York City was “enduring a historic weather event” with “record-breaking rain across the city, brutal flooding and dangerous conditions on our roads.”

He warned residents to stay indoors. 

According to CNN Meteorologist Pedram Javaheri, he said these are the rarest of weather alerts and are only reserved for when you have life-threatening flooding and water rescues, and catastrophic flooding taking place.

He added that It has never been issued for New York City before.

Also, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency in New York City for the first time, stating that the rain on Wednesday night — 3.1 inches in Central Park within an hour which shattered the record set only last week, when 1.94 inches of rain fell in the park during Tropical Storm Henri.

The city issued a travel ban in effect until 5 a.m. on Thursday. “All non-emergency vehicles must be off NYC streets and highways,” the emergency management office said on Twitter. A road through Central Park was dotted with cars that had been abandoned after getting stuck in the floodwaters.

 The New York City Police Department (NYPD) reported seven fatalities in the city and Mayor Hector Lora reported at least one death due to flooding in Passaic, New Jersey.
