Argentina 0-2 Colombia: Lionel Messi unable to prevent loss in Copa America opener
Lionel Messi’s hopes of winning a first major international tournament suffered a blow as Argentina were beaten 2-0 by Colombia in their Copa America opener on Saturday.
Second-half goals from substitutes Roger Martinez and Duvan Zapata were enough to ensure that Colombia started the tournament with three points.
Just as it started to look like Argentina would take control of the fixture, Martinez broke the deadlock in the 71st minute with a stunning strike.
The Club America forward collected a cross-field ball on the left wing before cutting across the area and firing past goalkeeper Franco Armani into the top corner.
Zapata was able to wrap things up 15 minutes later, sticking out a leg to divert Jefferson Lerma’s driven cross into the net.
After a quiet first half, in which the best chance was an effort from Martinez that deflected just wide, Argentina started to grow into the game as Messi found space and started to cause some problems.
