Elton John slams Vatican as Catholic Church rules not to bless same-sex unions
Elton John blasted the Vatican for being “hypocritical” in a furious tweet about gay marriage.
The Vatican, in a ruling approved by Pope Francis, said the Catholic Church cannot bless same-sex unions on Monday.
In a scathing tweet, Elton tore into the Church’s latest ruling.
He accused the Vatican of hypocrisy because it had invested money in Rocketman, which tells the true story about the gay singer finding love and finally marrying David Furnish.
Local Italian media reported around one million euros (£860,000) of Vatican funds were pumped into Elton’s biopic.
It was done through a Maltese investment group, DailyMail reported.
Elton wrote: “How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they ‘are sin’, yet happily make a profit from investing millions in Rocketman – a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David?? #hypocrisy.”
The I’m Still Standing hitmaker made waves with his comments on Twitter to his 949,000 followers on Monday following the announcement.
He and David were married in an emotional ceremony in 2014.
His outrage was ignited when the Vatican ruled not to bless same-sex unions in a statement on Monday.
A “negative” response was given to the question: “Does the Church have the power to give the blessing to unions of persons of the same sex?”
