‘How dad and I turned our love for cycling into a £1.5million business’

A father and son who managed to turn their failing family business into a £1.5million online success have revealed their story.

In 2013, sales at Hopkinson Cycles, which had been running on the high street for more than three generations, started to take a hit.

Their customer numbers started to fall, as did profits, and the family business quickly found itself in desperate need of help.

The store, based in Wakefield, Yorkshire, was founded in 1974 by Howard Hopkinson. He purchased a small bicycle shop on Northgate, Horbury – which later moved to Wakefield in Yorkshire.

“Our dad’s hobby was tinkering about and repairing old bicycles stored in the garden shed. That year he decided to turn his hobby into a business by buying an already established local bicycle shop,” Paul, Howard’s son told the Mirror.

“Within a few years his business had outgrown the small shop. He purchased a row of terrace houses on Queen Street, Horbury and made it into a bicycle repair centre and large showroom.
