Lil Wayne Releases New Album ‘Funeral’

It didn’t arrive immediately at midnight, but there was only a short wait: after announcing the release date last week, Lil Wayne’s new album Funeral is officially available.

Wayne is one of the biggest stars in rap, and Funeral brings an all-star rolodex of guests: Big Sean, Lil Baby, Jay Rock, Adam Levine, 2 Chainz, Takeoff, The-Dream, Lil Twist, XXXTENTACION, and O.T. Genasis all appear on the album. Producers include Mannie Fresh, STREETRUNNER, Ben Billions, Cool & Dre, and more throughout its 24 tracks.

Even though Lil Wayne released The Carter V in 2018, that was a collection of largely older music since the album had been sitting while he and Cash Money Records Founder Bryan “Birdman” Williams were working through a slew of legal issues. Otherwise, it’s been some time since Wayne fans have heard a current batch of new music from him: the Free Weezy Album from 2015 was exclusively available on TIDAL, and before that, I Am Not A Human Being II was as far back as 2013.

In a 2019 interview with VIBE, Lil Wayne said that his creative process has changed since his uber-prolific mixtape days from the mid-2000s. He’s much more deliberate, and he enjoys the idea of keeping up with the young guns.

“I used to go to that muf***a and do 12 songs a night,” Wayne says. “It’s different now. I can’t wait to get in the studio now every night, just to see what I can come up with. [Before] it was just me going to the studio and saying, let me kill ten more songs and then I’m going to go home or do whatever I was doing. Now, it’s let me see what I come up with. Self-discovery, rebirth – call it whatever you want to call it but it feels awesome, I swear to God.”
