Melania Trump wooden statue branded ‘disgrace’ that ‘looks more like Smurfette’
Melania Trump has been honoured with a life-size wooden statue in her home country of Slovenia – but locals branded it a ‘disgrace’.
The blocky, rustic figure – which depicts the US first lady standing in the blue outfit she wore to Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017 – was erected near her hometown of Sevnica on Friday.
The conceptual statue was commissioned by Berlin-based American artist Brad Downey and carved with a chainsaw by local folk artist Ales Zupevc, known as Maxi.
Mr Downey unveiled the statue as an accompaniment to his exhibition in the capital Ljubljana exploring Melania’s roots in the small Alpine country.
In the exhibition leaflet, a short description of the statue wrote: “Perhaps we are simply trying vigorously to make sense of things that might only be a slapstick prank. Who knows?”
